Hasnain Ali
Applied AI, Optimisation & Data Systems . Previously Senior Data Scientist @ ATMRI, NTU Singapore.
Melbourne, Australia
I am an applied AI, data science, and optimisation specialist with a track record of building decision-support systems that work in live operational environments. My work sits at the intersection of predictive modelling, mathematical optimisation, and data engineering — turning large, messy operational datasets into tools that reduce cost, improve efficiency, and support better decisions.
Most recently, I was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Senior Data Scientist at the Air Traffic Management Research Institute, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. There I built I-MATE, a real-time AI decision-support system for aircraft pushback scheduling at Singapore Changi Airport. I-MATE was progressively adopted into live operations and delivered measurable impact:
- 25.6% reduction in average taxi delays
- $18 million in estimated annual fuel savings
- 22% reduction in fuel consumption
- 7/8 usability rating from professional air traffic controllers
Alongside the system itself, I analysed 62M+ operational trajectory records using Python and SQL, filed a technology disclosure, and led a $13.4 million national research programme funded by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore.
My technical toolkit spans the full data-to-decision pipeline:
- Optimisation: Gurobi, CPLEX, OR-Tools, PuLP — MILP, LP, scheduling, resource allocation, metaheuristics (Tabu search, ACO, NSGA-II)
- Simulation: discrete-event simulation, agent-based modelling, scenario analysis, calibration and validation
- Data engineering: Python, SQL, Pandas, PySpark, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, MLflow
- Machine learning: Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, forecasting, reinforcement learning
I recently relocated to Melbourne, Australia, and I am open to roles in data science, operations research, analytics engineering, and optimisation. I also maintain OpenTaxi, an open-source airport surface movement simulator for path planning, conflict resolution, and reinforcement learning research.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, hiking, and writing reproducible notebooks on LLM systems and retrieval-augmented generation.
